Suffolk - Charles McDonald (Mac) Abernathy, 88, passed away on May 21, 2016. He was a native of Brunswick County, VA and the son of the late Robert Emmett and Virginia Stallings Abernathy. He was predeceased by his first wife Frances Howell Abernathy, and a brother Eugene H. Abernathy, step son Jimmy Boyette and grandson-in-law Jesse Bass.
Mac was a member of Main St. United Methodist Church but attended Cypress Chapel Christian Church where he was a member of New Hope Bible Class, a teacher, and member of Laymans Fellowship. He was a graduate of Randolph Macon College and was a World War II
Veteran. Mac was retired from IDS Investment Co. and the VA State Highway Dept. He was an organizing member of Pruden Center and first operational Chairman; he served on the Suffolk School Board for 12 years. Mac was also a member of American Legion Post 57 & past Commander, Cypress Ruritan Club
, Brunswick Co. Historical Society, Prime time singers, Scottish society, Isaac Walton League, and was very interested in history and researching the Abernathy family.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ann Boyette Abernathy, daughter; Lisa A. Fickle (Don), grandson; Nicholas Fickle, brother; Robert "Bobby" (Carol) Abernathy, children; Sandra B. Butler (Larry), Randy Boyette (Sharon), Deborah Boyette, 6 loving grandchildren Amy Amon (Kevin), Ashley Marshall (Scott), Julie McMahan (Brandon), Kimberly Bass, Brittany Boyette, and Brennan Boyette (Stacy), 6 great grandchildren Brian Marshall, Kendall Marshall, Cooper Bass, Ethan McMahan, Heaven Boyette, and Brennan Boyette, Jr., and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 11 AM at Cypress Chapel Christian Church, 1891 Cypress Chapel Rd, Suffolk with Rev. Alan Cruz and Chaplain Darren Winskow officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 24, 2016 from 6 to 7:30 PM at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory 509 W Washington St. Suffolk.
