Herman Lester West
Chesapeake - Herman Lester West, 89, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at his home.
Born in Palmetto, Florida he was the son of the late Frank and Elsie West. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Doris D. West.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and a U.S. Navy veteran (with a Marine Corps attachment) in the Korean War. After the war, He graduated from Richmond Professional Institute, The College of William & Mary (VCU) and earned his Bachelor of Physical Therapy Degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1956. He moved to the Tidewater area to become the Chief of Physical Therapy at Tidewater Rehabilitation Institute. In 1975 he was instrumental in designing and developing the physical therapy department at Chesapeake General Hospital, where he was the Director of Physical Therapy until his retirement in 1989. He was clinical instructor of physical therapy for the Medical College of Virginia, The Ohio State University and Duke University. Professional honors include Past President of the Virginia Physical Therapy Association and he served two appointments on the Governor's Advisory Committee on Physical Therapy to the State Medical Examiner's Board. Because of his true athleticism and love of all sports, he volunteered as trainer for Great Bridge High School Football for over 20 years. He also treated hundreds of wrestlers and other athletes from Great Bridge and other high schools throughout the area. He received the State of Virginia Athletic Association Distinguished Service Award. Herman was an active member of Great Bridge United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school, was in the Methodist Men, played harmonica in the Praise Band and supported missions. He was also a member and Past President of the Great Bridge Ruritan Club. Most of all Herman will remembered for his love for others and especially his family. He and Doris faithfully attended their son's and grandchildren's sporting events and continued to support athletics at Great Bridge and Hickory High Schools. He also loved to hunt with family members in Chesterfield County and Franklin, West Virginia. Herman said "you've got to dwell on the positive and to be deeply rooted to your family and your church."
Herman is survived by his children, Dr. David John West and wife Katherine, Rev. Jeffrey Dale West and wife Sondra; grandchildren, Rachel, Joshua, Sarah, Jessica, Lydia, Leah and Abigail; siblings, Elvin West, Donald West and wife Edith, Virginia Hawkins as well as a large extended family.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Friday, October 18, 2013 at Great Bridge United Methodist Church. Rev. Jeffrey Dale West and Rev. Tim Craig will officiate. The interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
The viewing will begin on Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake.
