Conrad Edward Haas, Sr., age 82, died in Suffolk, VA on September 16, 2018 from pancreatic cancer. He was born in New York City, NY on October 15, 1935.

His parents, Edward and Frances Haas are both deceased. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie Brock Haas and their four children: Gretchen S. Walzl and her husband, Kerry Walzl of Alexandria, VA, Conrad E. Haas, Jr. and his wife, Cathy Smith Haas of Suffolk VA, Michael T. Haas and his wife, Carrie Schaber Haas of Pinehurst, NC and Angela Haas and her spouse, Tracey Meier Haas of Raleigh, NC.

His grandchildren include: Bram Walzl, Austin Walzl, and Emily Wazl; Brandy H. Coombs and her husband, Eric, Jonathan Haas, and Jennifer Haas; Isabel Haas, step-grandchildren, Clay and William Schaber. His great grandchildren include: Geritt Coombs, Zaccary Coombs and Sammuel Coombs. He is survived by his sister, Ann Haas Wuest of Williamsburg, VA and her children, Dawn Wuest Thrasher and Kara Wuest.

Conrad Haas graduated from Chuckatuck High School, 1953: with a BS in Agricultural Economics from VA Tech, 1958 and a M.E.d. in Higher and Adult Education from UNC-CH, 1973. Over the years he was a farmer and later was employed by the VA Department of Agriculture, Planters Peanuts, Corning Glass International and retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC in Durham, NC, 1995 after 25 years as Director, Corporate Training and Development.

He was an active member of St. Mary’s of the Presentation Catholic Church in Suffolk, VA, Chuckatuck Ruritan Club, American Society of Training and Development, Western Tidewater Free Clinic, Greater Chuckatuck Historical Foundation and United States Croquet Association among other organizations, holding various leadership offices. He retired from the VA Army National Guard and Ready Reserve with the rank of Captain.

Conrad viewed himself as an ordinary person, while active in sports and games, particularly 6 wicket croquet, he enjoyed life with curiosity in a wide variety of things, e.g., being with his family, learning his faith, reading, music, traveling, stamp collecting, walking and helping others.

A funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday September 19, 2018 1 PM at St. Mary’s of the Presentation Catholic Church, 202 S. Broad St. Suffolk, VA with Father Emmanuel Mensah officiating. Burial will be private at a later date in Newman Memorial Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday September 18th from 6 to 7:30 PM at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory 509 W. Washington St. Suffolk, VA. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the United Church Foundation Homes and Services Foundation/ Outdoor Recreational Park at 100 Anna Goode Way Suffolk, VA 23434. He would say, “While the worst many of us have is wonderful, may peace and justice come to the least among us sooner than later. Think about it and do something!”
