Ruritan Landmark Dedication
Ruritan Landmark Dedication

A Highway Historical Marker honoring the memory of Ruritan National's first president, Dr. James Moncure Bland will be rededicated on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at noon at the Beechwood Cemetery.  The Holland District Ruritan Foundation and his family members have refurbished the marker recently.

The sign notes that Dr. J.M. Bland, a Boykins physician for more than 50 years, was elected president of Ruritan at its first national convention held in Suffolk in 1930.  The marker is on Meherrin Road a half mile north of Boykins in front of the Beechwood Cemetery where the doctor is buried.

The sign was originally erected in 1971 and donated by the Branchville Ruritan Club of which Dr. Bland was a honorary member of at the time of his death.  He also was a member of the Severn-Pendleton (N.C.) Club. At the 1971 dedication, Holland District Governor, Robert C. Wrenn of Emporia represented Ruritan National.  We are honored to have Mr. Wrenn as our master of ceremonies for the re-dedication.
