Virginia Beach - After living a wonderful and full life, ADRC M. Bruce Jones, USN, ret. passed away on February 22, 2014. Born in 1919 in Dover, NC one of 13 children and raised as a farm boy, he knew there was something better. At age 18 he joined the Navy where he and 5 brothers served in WWII. As an air crewman and later a flight engineer in the Pacific he logged 1700 flight hours in the PBY & B-24. He was a member of the first squadron to arrive in Pearl Harbor following the December 7th, 1941 attack. Among the honors he received are the Air Medal for combat, a Commendation Medal for combat, Air Crew Wings with 3 stars and the Asiatic Medal with 2 stars.
After 21 years he retired from the Navy and worked for 26 years as Head Librarian at the US Naval Safety Center. But his real passion was for volunteering. He had over 10,000 hours and 26 years at The Virginia Aquarium, 58 years as member and past president of The Kempsville Ruritan Club and 3 years at The Military Aviation Museum. He was on the Volunteer Council for the City of Va. Beach, a member of Kempsville Baptist Church for 58 years, a 25 year member and president of the Dixie Squares, a member & supporter of many other civic organizations, and for 18 years was an unofficial Girl Scout in his wife's Troop 231. When not volunteering he carved shore birds, went camping, and took his grandsons fishing.
He was predeceased by his grandson, Nathan Thomas Smith. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 69 years, Shirley Wolfe Jones, his 2 daughters and their husbands, Sharon Jones Ogden & David Ogden, Karen Jones Phimister & Stephen Phimister, three grandsons, Matthew Shea and his wife Niki, Kevin Shea and Conner Ogden, 2 great-grandchildren Brodie & Mia Shea and two brothers Jimmie M. & Jessie R. Jones. He also leaves behind a large and loving family who will be telling "Uncle Bruce" tales for years.
He was a storyteller, a community supporter, a man who valued his country, his home and his family, and one of the nicest men to ever walk the earth. He will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 27, 5 to 7 p.m. at Pleasant Hall, 5184 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA. Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, February 28, at Kempsville Baptist Church with a reception following at Pleasant Hall.
